I am wondering about the new Sheetz that is being built across from the Oakmont Country Club. Just how big is this place going to be? I am going to guess that it will be open 24/7. For anyone who lives up there in the Fairways or East Oakmont, you — along with the International Space Station — will see the lights. Kind of like it being the Fourth of July every day. It will serve as a lighthouse on the hill for everyone driving the turnpike late at night — Oh look! Its either Bethlehem or Oakmont. Lets not even go into the traffic problem that I can just see at rush hour at that stop light — people backed up in both directions because a trucker got his rig stuck because he wanted a hot dog. As construction begins on the Sheetz located at the border of Plum and Oakmont, the company hopes to show locals how the company worked to ease their concerns.
Construction for a new Sheetz at the border of Plum and Oakmont has begun despite inital concern from local residents and business owners. The store, to be built at the intersection of Hulton Road and Coxcomb Hill Road across from the Oakmont Country Club, elicited a number of concerns during its approval by Plum Council last year. However, according to Dave Hazlet, director of real estate for Sheetz, the company is doing what it can to be a positive addition to the area. "Initially there was some negativity from neighbors of the store," Hazlet said. "I believe we addressed their major concerns, and we'll be good neighbors to those around us at that location." Kudos to the Sheetz organization and Plum Borough. Based on my recent visits to the new Hulton Rd Sheetz facility I believe they built an outlet that has a reasonablely attractive design and is sited well, The signage is low-key yet informative and the lighting subdued relative to other Sheetz facilities.
