The Verona Police Department is investigating a late-night shooting that injured one person a little over a week ago. On April 27 at about 3:43 a.m. police were called to the Marina Pub on Arch Street after reports that a man had been shot. According to police, a 22-year-old had a gunshot wound in his leg. He told police he was leaving the bar with a friend when a black man in a black hooded sweatshirt sprayed him with pepper spray. According to the report, the suspect then shot the man in the leg and ran off. He has not been identified, and county police have taken over the investigation. One man is heading to common pleas court and another is awaiting his preliminary hearing.
A Penn Hills resident accused of shooting his gun while drunk at Boyce Park is heading to Allegheny Court of Common Pleas, while a second man is awaiting his preliminary hearing in district court. Allegheny County police charged the two men after police were called to the park earlier this month for reports of gun shots. On Wednesday, Glenn Mark Mooney, 58, was held for court on charges of carrying a firearm without a license; recklessly endangering another person; disorderly conduct; public drunkenness; weapons in a park; and shrubs, flowers, trees and grass. Charlene Walters of Penn Hills was shot on Saturday morning in East Liberty.
A Penn Hills woman who was shot during a youth football game on Saturday has died. According to KDKA, Charlene Walters, 64, died Monday night. It was originally reported that Walters was a Verona resident—she lived in a Penn Hills neighborhood with a Verona ZIP code. Walters, who was shot in the stomach and shoulder, was one of three injured Saturday morning at Pittsburgh Obama International Studies Academy in East Liberty. A 27-year-old male from Wilkinsburg also was shot in the chest and a 33-year-old female was shot in the hand. All were transported to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital by paramedics. Police are looking for tips after three people were shot early Saturday morning.
A Verona woman and two others were shot Saturday morning just before a midget football game was set to begin. According to Pittsburgh police, a shooting was reported at Pittsburgh Obama International Studies Academy at 515 North Highland Ave. in East Liberty just after 10 a.m. Teams from the East End and Wilkinsburg were playing at the fields. After one game ended, a fight broke out in the stands, and gunshots errupted, according to police. A 20-year-old from Penn Hills and a teen from Homewood have been charged after shots were fired at the Boyce Park Wave Pool earlier this month.
Two men are in jail after being charged in connection to a July 6 shooting near the Boyce Park Wave Pool entrance in Monroeville (close to the Plum border). Allegheny County police have charged Deshawn Hall, 20, of Penn Hills with aggravated assault, conspiracy, disorderly conduct, recklessly endangering another person, possessing an instrument of crime, prohibited acts and driving with a suspended license. A man involved in a mass shooting Thursday is from Edgewood.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported this morning that one man who died in a mass shooting at Western Psych Thursday is from Edgewood. "Michael Schaab, 25, of Edgewood, was pronounced dead at the clinic at 3 p.m., about 80 minutes after the shootings occurred," the report states. According to local obituaries, Schaab's sister, Nancy, died in October 2010 at the age of 26. Their parents are listed as Harry and Mary Schaab of Greensburg. The couple owns the Old Route 66 Grille in Greensburg. Mary spoke with the Associated Press and said their daughter was tragically killed in a domestic dispute. Seven people are expected to survive injuries they sustained when a gunman entered the lobby of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) of UPMC today. According to a UPMC press release, five patients—including two who have undergone surgery—are being treated at UPMC Presbyterian, and two have been treated and released. One had an injury not related to a gunshot wound. Two are dead and seven are injured after a shooting at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC in Oakland Thursday afternoon. Multiple news sources reported this afternoon that several people were shot on the University of Pittsburgh campus after a gunman went WPIC. Police were dispatched to the incident around 2 p.m., according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The incident occurred on Kane Road.
A 19-year-old male is injured after a shooting on Kane Road in Plum at 1 p.m. this afternoon. Plum police Chief Frank Monaco said the man was injured after another man knocked on his door claiming his car had broken down on nearby Route 286. According to the victim, Monaco said, he then was shot multiple times. The suspect, with an unknown official description at the time, then took off, Monaco said. Police have not found him. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police monitored the day camp at the East Suburban YMCA—at the intersection of Route 286 and Kane Road—to ensure the safety of the children.
