RHS Goes Red for the American Heart Association

February is American Heart Month, and these local students are doing something special to create awareness.

February is American Heart Month, and students at Riverview High School are hosting a special event to promote awareness and school spirit. On Friday, Feb. 8, students will be holding a "Red Out" event during the Varsity Boys' basketball game against Springdale. Senior class officers and the student council teamed up to plan the event. They have been selling red T-Shirts from the American Heart Association for $10 to raise money for the organization. Anyone who buys a shirt can get into the game for free. Erin Lauff, senior class officer, said the school has held a blood drive in the past, but students wanted to do something more inclusive. Anthony Malky, senior class officer, agreed. RHS Clubs Pitch in to Help Sandy Victims

Oakmont and Verona students are hoping to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy and "Restore the Shore."

Members of Riverview High School's Student Council, Builder's Club, National Honor Society and Key Club are uniting to raise money and supplies for victims of Hurricane Sandy. The students are working directly with Key Club officers in New Jersey (Point Pleasant and Lavallette) to deliver and provide supplies. Students will be collecting different items from Monday, Nov. 12, to Wednesday, Nov. 21, to help the victims rebuild their ability to achieve normalcy after the horrific damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. Some items needed are canned food, bottles of water, soap, coats and hoodies, toothbrushes, toiletries and more. A complete list of items has been included in the media section of this article. Verner Students Raise Money for Animal Rescue League

Students collected change to raise money for the organization.

The Verner Elementary Student Council has raised money for the Animal Rescue League of Western Pennsylvania in Rosedale. The students of the Verona school donated $21 via a guessing jar effort and donated it to the organization, which is located just a few miles away in Penn Hills.

Verner Elementary School Students Hold Thanksgiving Food Drive

The school's student council organized the food drive to benefit the Verona United Methodist Church food pantry.

Verner Elementary School Student Council held a Thanksgiving food drive for the Verona United Methodist Church's food pantry. Each family was asked to donate five canned goods/nonperishable items. In celebration of the students' great efforts to support community members, they will go to school today, Nov. 23, dressed in pajamas. Happy Thanksgiving from the students at Verner Elementary.

Verner Elementary Students Thank Police

Students showed their appreciation to police for keeping them safe.

On Monday, members for the Verner Elementary School Student Council presented police officers with a 'Thank You' poster signed by all of the students at Verner. The poster was to honor police officers who helped during a school lockdown last week after an international fugitive shot at FBI and police during a more than three-hour standoff.
