'Miles of Smiles' 5K & Walk Draws Many Supporters

The 'Miles of Smiles' 5K & 1-Mile Walk in Boyce Park drew hundreds of supporters for the families of the late Sunny Carney and Kristin Croyle, and for Lorri Nixon, who is fighting leukemia.

It was a cold morning Sunday at Boyce Park, but that didn't stop the community from coming together to support three local families, all affected by cancer. The morning's "Miles of Smiles" 5K Run and 1-Mile Walk kicked off with a moment of silence for the late Sunny Carney of Plum and Kristin Croyle of Murrysville. Those in attendance also sent well wishes and thoughts to Plum resident Lorri Nixon, who is battling leukemia. Carney, who battled carcinoid cancer for 10 years, died on Saturday—one day before the event. Croyle passed away from pancreatic cancer in August, leaving behind a husband and eight children. Hundreds of supporters participated in the race and walk, which was organized by Serving Other Souls and featured signs with …

Sunny Carney Dies After 10-Year Battle with Carcinoid Cancer

Carney has been an inspiration to the Plum community for years. A 5K benefiting the Sunny Carney Carcinoid Cancer Fund will be held in Boyce Park Sunday.

The Plum community lost a bit of sunshine on Saturday. Sunny Carney of Plum passed away peacefully Saturday, Nov. 3, after a courageous 10-year fight battling carcinoid cancer. Carney has inspired many family, friends, community members and other carcinoid cancer patients around the world with her blog and her book, "The Sunny Side of Cancer." She spoke at numerous cancer events locally, sharing stories of her journey which led her from Basel, Switzerland, to all of the top carcinoid cancer …

It's Always Sunny in Plum

Readers are finding inspiration in Sunny Carney's blog and new book during their own fight with cancer.

Though the tears may fall, she's always Sunny. Sunny Carney, a resident of Plum Borough, has battled cancer for the past 14 years and continues to fight carcinoid cancer with the strength of her family and her faith. She was, as she describes, on top of the world, until she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in her 20s. She overcame the cancer and the surgery to remove the ovary, but the cancer came back in her other ovary. Again, she seemed to beat the cancer, but she was later diagnosed with cancer in her lung. It seems every time she wins one round with cancer, it sneaks back somewhere else: ovaries, lung, and …
