Plum School Board Member Receives PSBA Honor

Tom McGough has received the PSBA Master School Board Member Accreditation.

Plum School Board member Tom McGough has been awarded the Master School Board Member accreditation from the Pennsylvania School Board Association (PSBA).  McGough, who has been a Plum School Board member since 1991, was one of only seven school board members in the state to receive the accreditation in 2012.  The awardees are those who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in attaining the goals of effective governance and meeting the needs of students for the 21st century. PSBA has been awarding the Master School Board Member accreditation since 2007.  To date, only 30 individuals have had the distinction of receiving the honor. Plum Athletes, Coach to be Inducted into East Boros Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2012

The honorees include sports standouts from nine school districts—including Plum Borough School District—in Pittsburgh's eastern suburbs.

The Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, East Boros Chapter, will celebrate its 35th year on Wednesday, Oct. 11, as it inducts the eight-member Class of 2012 at Edgewood Country Club in Churchill. Honorees are: Brian Cipollone (Plum), Cheryl Gatons (Plum), Tom McGough (Plum), Joe Naunchik (Plum), Carol Sprague (Penn Hills), Joanne Boyle (Gateway), Tony Lonero (Penn Hills) and Melanie Morgan-Miller (Gateway). The East Boros Chapter encompasses the communities within the Plum, Riverview, Woodland Hills, Wilkinsburg, Penn Hills, Gateway, East Allegheny, Franklin Regional and Penn-Trafford school districts. Each fall, the chapter inducts deserving alumni from these high schools, and schools that preceded them, who have brought lasting fame and …

Ha, I was checking out this site for Riverview Raider info and found this article. This guy Tom McGough and his kids are nice folks. I am from Beaver Falls and he ran a day long clinic for kids at a church in nearby Chippewa Township. Very cheap and the kids got a ton of instruction out of it. Congrats to Tom on the recognition.   more ›

Winners of Plum School Board Race Include Two Incumbents, Three Newcomers

Two incumbents keep their seats and three newcomers with no prior experience take theirs in the Plum School Board election race.

It's a mix of old and new in the Plum Borough School Board race results. Among the winners are an incumbent who has served on the board for 20 consecutive years and a new director who just graduated from high school last year. Based on the results with 100 percent of precincts reporting, Richard Zucco, who ended up on the Republican and Democrat tickets, was the top vote-getters with 3,174 votes. Zucco was followed closely by incumbent Democrat Tom McGough, who has served for five consecutive terms. McGough received 2,923 votes. Republican John St. Leger received 2,683 votes and Joe Tommarello, also a Republican, received 2,612 votes. Democrat incumbent Loretta White rounded out the top slots with 2,570 votes. Plum School Board Members Collide Over Staffing Agency Contract

Some school board members say the district is overpaying for Kelly Services to fill substitute positions, but a vote to dissolve the contract with the agency fails.

Some Plum School Board members were ready to terminate the staffing contract with Kelly Educational Staffing Services at Tuesday's board meeting. “I’m not happy with Kelly Services,” said board member Loretta White. The debate over the agency’s effectiveness in filling substitute staffing needs was sparked by a vote to raise the hourly wage for substitute custodians from $8 to $10, and to raise substitute food services workers from $7.50 to $8. The board approved the pay increases with a 6-3 vote, with board members White, Tom McGough and Rose McGuirk opposing the increase. “I think we’re overpaying for services,” White said.
