Here are the Verona police reports from February through March 13.
A man has been charged with theft after being accused of stealing from vehicles in Verona. Verona police have charged Brandon Noel, 26, of Penn Hills with receiving stolen property. According to police Chief Ron McLemore, police received five complaints of thefts from motor vehicles on Feb. 27. All vehicles were unlocked, and Noel is accused of stealing items such as eyeglasses and GPS overnight. Noel was arrested on March 13 and currently is being held at the Allegheny County Jail. McLemore asks that all residents lock their vehicles and report any suspicious activity to police. The following incidents were reported to the Verona Police Department. Information was obtained from police Chief Ron McLemore and court documents. Drugs Corey M. Thompson, 28, of Verona was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, prohibited acts and disorderly conduct after a Jan. 23 incident on East Railroad Avenue. Assault James Edward Sundberg, 57, of Verona was charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person, harassment and disorderly conduct after a Jan. 19 incident on South Avenue. The Dunkin' Donuts along Allegheny River Boulevard in Verona was robbed at gunpoint early Monday morning. According to police Chief Ron McLemore, a young black male—about 5'2 or 5'3 tall—who was wearing all black clothing and had a handgun stole an undetermined amount of money from the business. Three people are facing drug-related charges after a drug bust in Verona. During the Verona Council meeting on Tuesday, Police Chief Ron McLemore said police officers obtained a search warrant for a home on Center Avenue, where drug activity had been suspected. During the search, which occurred on Dec. 13, police found drug paraphernalia and suspected heroin. Police charged David Lee Collins, 53, of Verona with prohibited offensive weapon, possession of a controlled substance and prohibited acts; Terri Schleicher, 45, of Verona with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia; and Mark Roth, 52, of Verona with possession of drug paraphernalia. Here's a roundup of some items discussed at the Nov. 27 Verona Council meeting: Police resignation and hire Borough officials accepted the resignation of one police officer and hired another. Officer Ryan Shook resigned after getting a full-time position at Slippery Rock University. Councilman Pat McCarthy wished him well. Benjamin Straw has been hired as a part-time officer to fill Shook's vacancy. Line, curb painting Officials agreed to have the road department paint a line on a local road and the curb of a new business. Apology A juvenile who broke a newly-installed community sign at Cribbs Field last month apologized to council for his actions. “It was an accident," the teenage boy said. "I didn’t mean to break it.” Council thanked the boy for attending the meeting and expressing remorse. The sign has been repaired. Tax Collection Council hired two firms to collect its taxes. The law offices of Ira Weiss was hired to collect delinquent municipal taxes and real estate fees and Berkheimer Tax Administrator was appointed as the deputy tax collector for current real estate taxes. Verona officers have charged two people after a drug-related incident on Aug. 6.
A Verona man and Penn Hills woman face drug-related charges after an incident on Wildwood Avenue last week. After Verona police officers received information about possible drug activity occurring at the home, they obtained a search warrant. During the search, which occurred at about 2 a.m. on Aug. 6, police recovered a package of suspected heroin, numerous items of drug paraphernalia—scales, pipes, syringes—and cash from the home, according to police Chief Ron McLemore. Tells Verona It Shouldn’t Get Axed After hearing a presentation from Guardian Angel Ambulance staff, Verona Council is in the process of deciding whether or not it will retain the company’s service. Staff from Guardian Angel Ambulance spoke to council at a meeting Tuesday, addressing criticism about the company’s response time that led council to consider switching companies. The Verona Police Department hosted a Bike Safety Derby Saturday morning.
With warmer weather on the horizon, more children are out on their bicycles, and the Verona Police Department continued its tradition in teaching them to be safe. The bike safety derby for children was held at the police department parking lot on Saturday. During the event, children learned the ropes about how to ride a bicycle properly by participating in an obstacle course and watching videos about bicycle safety. Children received free helmets and had their bikes inspected by staff from Dirty Harry's in Verona. Those who completed the obstacle course safely received a prize. Did you take photos at the event?
