Earth Week Events Planned in the Plum-Oakmont Area

Here's how you can get involved in the community.

In honor of Earth Day, various organizations are sponsoring events and activities in the community. Here's how you can get involved: Verona Verona is hosting its third annual "Earth Day Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 27 at Verona Municipal Park, 736 E. Railroad Ave. The family event stresses energy conservation through "green technologies"  with demonstrations, literature, product vendors, food vendors, live music, and a kid's corner all geared toward energy conservation.   Monroeville Monroeville will host the "18th Annual Jack Sedlak Memorial Clean Up Day," a litter cleanup from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20 starting at the Monroeville Municipal Building. Shot Officer, Riverview Grad Remains in ICU

Pittsburgh police officer Morgan Jenkins, a native of the Twin Boros, was shot in Homewood Thursday.

A Pittsburgh police officer who is a native of the Twin Boros continues to recover after being shot in the line of duty on Thursday. Morgan Jenkins, 33, was shot by James R. Hill, 24, of Homewood after he and his partner attempted to stop his vehicle in Homewood. Jenkins, an Oakmont/Verona native and a 1997 Riverview High School graduate, underwent surgery at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital after the incident. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Jenkins remains in the intensive care unit after a bullet fragment near his spine was removed. The newspaper reports that a bullet struck him in the back of his left biceps, went through his chest and cut through his lung before stopping near his spine. However, Pittsburgh police Lt. Daniel …

Joyful Twirlers Baton Ministry Entertains Throughout the East Suburbs

The Christian-based ministry began in Forest Hills and is led by two Verona and Oakmont residents.

When Gina Stropkaj of Verona heard about a group called the Joyful Twirlers, she was ecstatic. "I couldn't believe there was a Christian organization doing something fun for girls," she said. "Baton twirling was something I did when I was younger, so I thought it would be something great that we could do together." The group, a Christian-based baton ministry, has been in existence for 13 years. Founded by Jessica Nigra of Forest Hills, the group began meeting and practicing at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church. For the last two years, Stropkaj has been acting as the group's director, and Oakmont resident Loretta Worsham has been acting as the assistant director of the group. PennDOT Postpones Plum Street Bridge Closing in Oakmont, Penn Hills

The closing is postponed to Monday, April 15.

The bridge that carries Plum Street over Plum Creek in Oakmont and Penn Hills will be closed to traffic beginning on Monday, April 15, according to PennDOT. The bridge was originally scheduled to be closed long-term on Thursday, April 11, but that has been postponed, PennDOT said. The closure will begin at 7 a.m. on Monday and continue through early July. The bridge area is east of Allegheny River Boulevard near the intersection with Dark Hollow Road. About 2,614 vehicles use this bridge on an average day, according to PennDOT. The $1.2 million project includes replacing the bridge deck, strip seal dams, sidewalk and parapets, and other improvements. The bridge is currently rated structurally deficient, but when the project is complete, …

It's finally warming up, and the sunsets, it seems, are getting prettier! I spotted these pretty hues in the sky earlier this week while I was heading home after an assignment. Verona Revitalization—New Trees, More Grant Money

New trees will be planted in the business district, and the borough might have more grant money available for revitalization.

Work toward Verona's business district revitalization is under way, and it seems as though the borough might have more money to spend on the project. The improvement plan for the borough's streetscape project includes 46 lights and landscaping along Allegheny River Boulevard; Center, South and East Railroad avenues; and James Street. Earlier this week, Mike Vento, the architecture and design chair for the Verona Business District Advisory Committee, said it looks as though the borough will receive a $150,000 county grant with a 15 percent match. The borough already has received a $143,000 grant through the county's Community Development Block Grant program. Verona Borough must contribute an extra $21,485 in cash or in-kind services. Vento …

Churches in the Forest Hills-Regent Square area are hosting Easter services. Here's a roundup: PLUM Our Lady of Joy Parish—The service of Stations of the Cross will be held on Good Friday at 7 p.m. There will be an Easter Vigil at 8 p.m. on Saturday. Local Hero: Verona Woman Nominated in Online Wheelchair Van Contest

Winners will receive a vehicle tailored to meet their needs.

A Verona woman and her family are in the running to receive a free wheelchair-accessible vehicle valued at about $40,000—and they could use your votes.  The online contest sponsored by the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) is again awarding three  “Local Heroes” with wheelchair-accessible vehicles custom tailored to meet their needs. The contest is part of National Mobility Awareness Month. To qualify, Joe Englert submitted an entry explaining how his disabled daughter Sammie and her entire family would benefit from a new vehicle.
