Plum Man Hides Gun in Potato Chip Bag, Faces Charges

Dwayne Kareem Feeney, 21, was charged after an incident in Wilkinsburg.

A Plum man faces gun charges in Common Pleas Court following an October incident in Wilkinsburg in which he is accused of hiding a gun inside a potato chip bag. Dwayne Kareem Feeney, 21, was held for court by District Judge Kim M. Hoots in her Wilkinsburg courtroom last week on a charge of firearms not to be carried without a license. According to a criminal complaint filed by Wilkinsburg police, officers conducted surveillance on three people who were in the 1500 block of Park Avenue on Oct. 18, 2012. Police watched Feeney walk to the side of a building, then emerge again and walk to a vehicle that drove away. When the vehicle returned, the officers watched Feeney walk again to the side of the building, and then leave the scene. Police …

Unsolved Cases: Taylor Murphy Went Missing in September

The Wilkinsburg teen might still be in the Pittsburgh area.

Taylor Murphy, 17, has been missing from Wilkinsburg since Sept. 20. Authorities believe she could still be in the Pittsburgh area. She is classified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children as an endangered runaway. Taylor is described as 5 feet, 4 inches tall; 140 pounds; with black hair and brown eyes; and having a tattoo on her upper arm. She will turn 18 on Jan. 23. Wilkinsburg Restaurant Featured on Friday's 'Kitchen Nightmares'

Chef Gordon Ramsay takes on Ms. Jean's Southern Cuisine in a new show that airs Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. on the Fox Network.

As a young child, Jean Gould would stand on a chair and watch her mother cook. That love of cooking extended into adulthood—first for her church, then in her own restaurant. Woman Dies After Being Shot at Midget Football Game

Charlene Walters of Penn Hills was shot on Saturday morning in East Liberty.

A Penn Hills woman who was shot during a youth football game on Saturday has died. According to KDKA, Charlene Walters, 64, died Monday night. It was originally reported that Walters was a Verona resident—she lived in a Penn Hills neighborhood with a Verona ZIP code. Walters, who was shot in the stomach and shoulder, was one of three injured Saturday morning at Pittsburgh Obama International Studies Academy in East Liberty. A 27-year-old male from Wilkinsburg also was shot in the chest and a 33-year-old female was shot in the hand. All were transported to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital by paramedics. Road Sealing and Patching to Occur in Plum-Oakmont Area This Week

Here's a look at where PennDOT road crews will be working this week.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation road crews will be crack-and-joint sealing and patching roads in the Plum-Oakmont area this week. All activities are weather permitting. Lane closures and restrictions should be expected in work areas. Crack-and-joint sealing is a preservation activity that prolongs the life of road surfaces by preventing moisture from entering cracks and joints, which can cause potholes and premature deterioration, according to PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi. Short-term, slow-moving lane closures will occur in various locations according to the following schedule: Shoulder patching also will occur on Leechburg Road in Plum from Sardis to Kerr roads between Monday and Friday, Oct. 15 to 19. ______________________ …

Verona Woman Reportedly Shot At Midget Football Game

Police are looking for tips after three people were shot early Saturday morning.

A Verona woman and two others were shot Saturday morning just before a midget football game was set to begin. According to Pittsburgh police, a shooting was reported at Pittsburgh Obama International Studies Academy at 515 North Highland Ave. in East Liberty just after 10 a.m. Teams from the East End and Wilkinsburg were playing at the fields. After one game ended, a fight broke out in the stands, and gunshots errupted, according to police. A 64-year-old female from Verona was shot in the stomach and shoulder, a 27-year-old male from Wilkinsburg was shot in the chest and a 33-year-old female was shot in the hand. I'm absolutely saddened by this incident, but not surprised. The behavior of the crowd at the Riverview/Wilkinsburg high school football game a few weeks ago was deplorable and I had concerns for my children's safety. Unfortunately, the common denominator at inner city games seems to be trouble, amongst other things. It shouldn't be this way.   more ›

Has a gift from a leprechaun-believing Edgewood woman 34 years ago brought luck to the career of a journalist?

“Would you like to talk to me for a St. Patrick’s Day story?” That was the gist of the phone call I received from Priscilla McPherson in my early days of newspaper reporting when I worked for the now-defunct weekly Wilkinsburg Gazette. The paper also served Edgewood, where Mrs. McPherson lived. “I’m a fan of the wee folk,” she explained as we made arrangements for an interview. Intrigued, and in dire need of a St. Patrick’s Day story, I took her up on the offer. She lived on a side street off West Hutchinson Avenue, though I’m not sure which one now. Aside from some leprechaun decorations, her home was typical of an elderly couple in the late 1970s and she quickly made me feel welcome. An engaging storyteller, she wove the tales of how …
