Let the games begin!
The Riverview Athletic Association kicked off spring baseball/softball season with a parade along Allegheny River Boulevard on Saturday. The teams marched from Verona to Riverside Park in Oakmont where the games began. Did you take photos? Anyone traveling on Allegheny River Boulevard on Saturday morning should be aware of some restrictions. On Saturday, April 20, at 9 a.m., the Riverview Athletic Association will be celebrating opening day of the spring baseball/softball season with a parade. The Little League teams will march on the boulevard from Verona Borough to Riverside Park. Borough council is getting ready for road work this summer.
Now that spring is here, Oakmont Council is getting ready for road projects. Curb, road paving and brick reconstruction projects in the borough are expected to occur in the near future. Last week, council hired Joseph Palmieri Construction Inc. to replace curbs along Allegheny Avenue from College to California avenues for $23,500. Another firm submitted a lower bid of $18,185, but officials said Joseph Palmieri Construction was the lowest responsible bidder, due to mixed feedback about timeliness from references. Because the work affects traffic on one of the borough's main roads, Councilman Tim Favo said timeliness and following a schedule is important to the project. The Verona Borough revitalization begins on Saturday with tree planting! The community is invited to help plant trees provided by TreeVitalize along Allegheny River Boulevard. Anyone interested in volunteering can sign up at www.paconserve.org/300 to volunteer or contact Bridget Seery at 724-977-8374 or turtlegirl7_@hotmail.com. Volunteers will meet at Trinity Lutheran Church, 701 Allegheny River Boulevard, to help plant 17 trees in pits along the business district. Work will occur from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Crews will be working on tree removal as part of the borough's revitalization efforts.
If you're traveling through Verona on Sunday, be prepared for some delays. Allegheny River Boulevard will be closed to traffic on Sunday morning, March 24, weather permitting. Crews will be removing trees along the roadway between Center and South avenues as part of Verona Borough’s revitalization effort. As part of the borough's plans, new trees will be planted in the business district. However, existing trees must be removed. Allegheny River Boulevard will be closed from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. Traffic will be detoured using East Railroad Avenue. Verona police will assist with control traffic. This year’s PennDOT construction work will include $282 million worth of road and bridge improvement projects.
This year’s PennDOT construction work will include $282 million worth of road and bridge improvement projects that hit every corner of Allegheny County. About half of the money being spent on road projects in the county will be spent on bridge reconstruction. One of the most significant projects to begin this year, is the Hulton Bridge replacement in Oakmont and Harmar, according to PennDOT officials. PennDOT District 11 Executive Dan Cessna said during a press conference last week that the project is estimated to cost between $60 million and $80 million. Business district visitors can park for three hours instead of two.
Anyone who visits the business district in Oakmont can park on Allegheny River Boulevard for an extra hour. On Monday, Oakmont Council approved a three-hour parking limit on the boulevard. The parking limit used to be two hours. In November, officials agreed to implement a 60-day trial for the increased parking time in the business district.
