Plum School Notebook: Contract, Parking, Auditorium Sound

A contract with the administrative assistants and additional parking at the high school were among the items discussed at the November school board voting meeting.

The school board approved a three-year agreement between the Plum Borough School District Educational Secretaries ESP/PSEA/NEA and the district retroactive to July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2014. According to the Plum Advance Leader, Becky Gralewski, president of the Plum Borough School District Educational Secretaries/Educational Support Professionals, said the union voted 15-0 to approve contract terms, which mirrored a fact-finder's recommendations. Riverview School Board Notebook: November Voting Meeting

Here's a roundup of items discussed last week at the Riverview School Board's November voting meeting: AFS Student Riverview High School is hosting a student from abroad. Isabella Gudmundsdottir has been accepted as a student via the AFS Intercultural Programs. She has been studying at the school since Nov. 13, and Superintendent Peggy DiNinno said current students have been welcoming Isabella. She also participated in a field trip to see the band's flash mob performance downtown. Personnel Language Arts Facilitator Lori Ruggiero has been named the full language arts coordinator at Verner Elementary. Plum Council Notebook: April Voting Meeting

Soccer field lighting, security cameras and more discussed.

Here's a roundup of items discussed at the Plum Council April 9 meeting: Soccer Field Lighting Plans to install new soccer field lights at Larry Mills Park received the go-ahead from council. Officials agreed to purchase the lights from Musco Lighting for $79,900. They also agreed to hire Vince's Electric Service to install the lights for $45,000. The borough and the Plum Borough Soccer Association have received about $50,000 worth of grants for the project. The soccer association will pay the borough back for the remainder of the project cost over the next few years at 3 percent interest. The lights most likely will be installed by the end of June. Verona Council Notebook: Regular April Meeting

New police car, new public works truck and sewer repairs were among the items discussed.

Here's a roundup of items discussed at the April 10 Verona Council meeting: New Police Car Mayor Dave Ricupero said the police department would get a new Ford Explorer. Ricupero said a $15,000 grant received with the help of state Rep. Tony DeLuca (D-32) will expire in June. That amount will be used to pay for a portion of the car this year. Next year, the borough would be responsible for about $12,093. The police department most likely will retire its Jeep. New Public Works Truck Officials have agreed to purchase a new public works truck. The total cost of the truck is $70,000 and includes all the equipment needed for the department, including for snow removal. The borough has a $20,000 grant for the purchase of the truck. Here's a roundup of items discussed at the Jan. 31 Plum School Board meeting: Sale of Property School board members have agreed to sell the land where the former Plum Borough School District Administration Building sat. The building and 1.79 acres of land were sold to Michael E. Podobnik and Sherry A. Podobnik of Plum Borough for $185,000. The land has been vacant since the administration moved to the high school. "It's about time," said school board member Kevin Dowdell. "That's been sitting there for a number of years." Bus Service RFPs The board agreed to solicit proposals for contracted Student Transportation Services. Here's a round up of issues discussed at Oakmont's council meeting: Dark Hollow Road Zoning Oakmont officials are considering zoning changes for Dark Hollow Road. The changes would take the area's current industrial zoning and change its designation to light industry zoning. The difference, council President Timothy Favo said, is essentially the difference between zoning for a steel mill and zoning for an automotive repair business. Any business in the area under the industrial zoning would be grandfathered in, he said. Council members also are looking into a green space designation for part of that area. Here's a roundup of items discussed at the Nov. 7 Plum Council work session. Trestle Road Traffic Study Officials presented the results of a traffic study on Trestle Road performed by Trans Associates. Residents of the road asked the borough to take action to stop speeding on the small residential road last spring. Trans Associates found that the average speed of those traveling the road is 42 miles per hour. The speed limit on the road is 25 miles per hour. Fifteen percent of the cars are going faster, according to the study. Traffic calming measures, Trans Associates reported, would include speed humps every 300 feet and a total of 12 signs posted on the road. The cost for the measures would be about $10,000. The bins—receptables for Boy Scout can and paper collections as well as a bin for all recyclables from the borough's trash collector Waste Managment— are in a similar area now, but currently visible from Allegheny River Boulevard, according to officials. "They're so unsightly looking entering Verona," Councilwoman Rhoda Gemellas-Worf said. "It just looks very busy."
