Construction on Squirrel Hill Tunnel Begins this Month

Closures, construction and traffic—all to come in mid-March!

Residents soon will have to find alternative routes to avoid traffic as the Squirrel Hill Tunnels partially close, creating an even larger construction headache for most who use the Parkway East on a regular basis. The $49 million project is slated to begin in the next few weeks by Walsh Construction Company of Canonsburg. “The Squirrel Hill Tunnels needs the rehabilitation work and this is the first major project in many years,” said James Struzzi, press officer for Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 11. “Secondly, we had funding available to do the major work and when we have funding available, we have to move forward.” The project includes updating electrical systems, lighting system, control system, ventilation system, …

Motorists Encouraged to Report Potholes, Roadway Concerns

Potholes, safety and other roadway concerns on state roads can be reported to PennDOT by calling 1-800 FIX ROAD (1-800-349-7623) or directly to county offices. Road concerns on local roads should be reported to borough offices.

It's freeze-thaw season, which means it's pothole time! Officials of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 11—of which Plum, Oakmont and Verona are a part of—are encouraging motorists to report potholes or other road problems on state-owned roads, such as Allegheny River Boulevard, Coxcomb Hill Road, Hulton Road, Logans Ferry Road and the Pennsylvania Turnpike. “We want our roadway system to be the best it can be, but with a network of 2,568 miles, we can’t be everywhere at once when sudden problems arise,” District Executive Dan Cessna said. “Motorists can help us keep state roads in good shape by reporting any problems they encounter, especially if it involves a safety concern.”  With the frigid temperatures and …

Overnight Single Lane Traffic on Southbound Route 28 Continues Tuesday

Here's a traffic update.

Traffic on southbound (inbound) Route 28 in Pittsburgh and Millvale will be reduced to a single lane overnight beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 10, weather permitting. Crews will continue work to construct retaining walls along the southbound lanes. Restrictions will occur as needed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. weeknights through Feb. 1 between the 40th Street Bridge and East Ohio Street. Motorists are advised to use caution and allow extra time when traveling on Route 28. Road Repairs to Occur in Plum This Week

Several Plum roads are included in this week's Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's maintenance schedule.

Several road repairs are scheduled in the area for this week, Jan. 9 to 13. Patching will occur on New Texas Road from Leechburg to Saltsburg roads; inlet improvements will occur on Mill Street from Iowa Street to Milltown Road; and ditching will occur on Old Leechburg Road from Sardis Road to Route 366. Ditching also will occur on Route 286 in Monroeville from Route 22 to Old Frankstown Road. All activities are weather permitting. Lane closures and restrictions should be expected in work areas. Motorists are urged to call 1-800-FIX-ROAD (1-800-349-7623) to report roadway concerns on state routes and interstates. Guide Rail Repairs to Occur on 1-376 East Thursday Night

Here's a traffic update.

Intermittent, short-term single lane and shoulder closures will occur in several locations I-376 Parkways East on Thursday night, Jan. 5, weather permitting. The brief lane closures and restrictions are necessary as contractor crews conduct guide rail repairs. All exits and ramps will remain open. Work will occur from 10 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. on the Parkway East Eastbound (outbound) between the Churchill (Exit 79) and Penn Hills (Exit 81) interchanges. The prime contractor for the repairs is Penn Line Services, Inc. Motorists are advised to use caution and slow down when traveling through the area. Overnight Closures on the Route 8, Highland Park Bridge Ramp Begin Next Week

Here's a traffic update.

The ramp from southbound Route 8 (Butler Street) to the northbound  Highland Park Bridge (toward Route 28) in the City of Pittsburgh will be closed Monday through Sunday nights, Jan. 9 to 15, weather permitting. Crews will be conducting barrier repairs. Closures will occur from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night. Signs will be posted to guide motorists during the overnight closures. No closures are planned on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13 and 14. Posted detour: The work is included in a $1.3 million contract with Lone Pine Construction Inc. of Bentleyville, Pa., for improvements on several bridges in PennDOT District 11. Hulton Bridge Repairs Begin Next Week in Oakmont

Here's a traffic update.

Traffic on the Hulton Bridge will be reduced to a single lane with alternating use on weeknights beginning Monday, Jan. 2, weather permitting.    Crews will be performing structural steel repairs on the bridge, which carries Hulton Road over the Allegheny River in Harmar Township and Oakmont. Restrictions will occur from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. as needed Sunday to Thursday nights through Jan. 23. Brief stoppages of 15 minutes or less also will occur. There will be several restrictions on Route 28 beginning Monday, Dec. 19. Intermittent, short-term single lane and shoulder closures will occur between the RIDC (Exit 10) and the Freeport/Millerstown (Exit 16) interchanges Monday through Thursday, Dec. 19 to 22, weather permitting. Work and restrictions will occur between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lane closures and restrictions are necessary as contractor crews conduct cable median barrier and guide rail repairs. This work will include short-term moving operations to conduct various minor repairs. All exits and ramps will remain open. Jim Struzzi writes countless press releases every day while working as PennDOT’s spokesman at the District 11 headquarters in Collier. But it’s his literary skills as a novelist that the Bridgeville resident is trying to showcase during his free time. “Writing has always been my passion and something I’ve wanted to pursue,” Struzzi said. “It’s pretty cut and dry when it comes to writing a press release about roads and bridges. For a creative person, you need to have an outlet.” Struzzi—his PennDOT district covers Plum, Oakmont and Verona—has already released two books, The Christmas Secret and Jacob’s Haunting. A single lane closure on southbound (inbound) Route 28 in Millvale will occur this weekend, Dec. 9 to 12, weather permitting. Crews will be reconstructing barrier along the southbound lanes. The single, left lane closure will occur from 9 a.m. on Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday from the Millvale off-ramp to the 40th Street Bridge intersection. All ramps and exits will remain open.
