The bridge is expected to reopen in late June.
The bridge that carries Plum Street over Plum Creek in Oakmont and Penn Hills will be closed to traffic long-term beginning on Thursday, April 11, according to PennDOT. Jim Struzzi, PennDOT spokesman, said the closing is expected to continue through late June while repairs are made to the bridge, currently rated as structurally deficient. About 2,614 vehicles use this bridge on an average day, according to PennDOT. The $1.2 million repair project that involves replacing the bridge deck, strip seal dams, sidewalk and parapets, substructure repairs, spot/zone painting, milling and overlay on the approaches and other improvements. Tunnel closure will begin on Friday.
The outbound (eastbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel will be closed this weekend, April 5-8, and significant delays should be expected and alternate routes considered. The closure will begin 11 p.m. on Friday, April 5, through 6 a.m. on Monday, April 8. Crews will begin work postponed from this past weekend to remove the outbound tunnel ceiling and continue rehabilitation and preservation work on the outbound bridge over Commercial Street. When overall work is completed, vertical clearance in the eastbound tunnel will increase from 13 feet, 6 inches to 14 feet, 9 inches. Signs will be posted to guide motorists. Motorists should be aware of these additional parkway restrictions.
Motorists traveling inbound on the parkway will experience some restrictions Saturday. Overhead sign safety inspections on the inbound Parkway East (westbound I-376) in Churchill will occur on Saturday morning, March 23, weather permitting. Work requiring intermittent single-lane closures and traffic shifts will occur from 6 a.m. to noon on the inbound Parkway East between the Monroeville/Route 22 (Exit 80) and Churchill (Exit 79B) interchanges. Mackin Engineering and the Sofis Rigging Company will conduct the work. Single lane closures in each direction will continue Friday evening into Saturday morning.
The closure planned for this weekend, March 22-25, in the Squirrel Hill Tunnel has been canceled due to expected inclement weather, according to PennDOT. The tunnel will remain open in both directions this weekend. Single lane closures in each direction will continue Friday evening into Saturday morning. Future tunnel closures will be rescheduled at a later date.

John Goold hopes other options can be explored in favor of demolition.
A Plum-Oakmont Patch reader has formed an online petition in support of saving the Hulton Bridge. John Goold recently posted the petition on Patch inviting signatures from anybody who favors exploring options that don't involve tearing down the historic bridge. The Hulton Bridge replacement in Oakmont and Harmar Township is one of the most significant upcoming PennDOT projects in the area this year. Built in 1908, Hulton Bridge carries traffic over the Allegheny River between Oakmont and Harmar and has two lanes of traffic. According to PennDOT, the scope of $60 million to $80 million project will include replacing the existing bridge with a "simple but elegant" four-lane structure just upstream of the existing bridge. PennDOT issues a warning to drivers
PennDOT will close the outbound Squrirrel Hill Tunnel this weekend, March 22-25. "Significant delays should be expected and alternate routes considered," according to a PennDOT press release. The closure begins at 11 p.m. Friday and will last until 6 a.m. Monday. A posted detour will require traffic to form a single lane exiting the Squirrel Hill/Homestead exit. The inbound tunnel will remain open, although short-term traffic stoppages may occur for equipment access and material removal. To minimize impacts on Squirrel Hill businesses, which will remain open and accessible, different detours are being used during day and night hours. The project includes replacing the bridge deck, strip seal dams, sidewalk and parapets, substructure repairs, spot/zone painting, milling and overlay the approaches and other improvements. Short-term traffic restrictions will begin on Monday in the bridge area east Allegheny River Boulevard near the intersection with Dark Hollow Road. Traffic will be restricted to a single lane alternating use from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays as needed through the end of March.
