Participants can set their own goals and walk at their own pace using a complimentary walking guide.
More than 30 libraries, including Plum Borough Community Library, are encouraging walkers ages 50 and older, to take a Wise Walk. The free 10-week walking program is being held in partnership between the Allegheny County Library Association, AARP and UPMC for Life. Participants can set their own goals and walk at their own pace using a complimentary walking guide. The Wise Walk aims to help adults age well with exercise and healthy aging resources at their local libraries. Groups participating in the Plum program meet at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday mornings at the library. Water, healthy snacks and T-shirts are provided. Join the library on Saturday to celebrate!
The Plum Borough Community Library is inviting the public to celebrate 10 years at its current location on Saturday, Oct. 13. The Plum Library Friends is hosting a "Location Celebration" open house event, which will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Everyone is invited to tour the library, sign up for a library card, have a cookie and register to win a door prize. The Plum Borough Community Library will hold a book discussion for tweens and teens about the popular book, "The Hunger Games." Pick up a copy of the book at the library, read it and attend a workshop on Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the book. The book is the first of the Hunger Games trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. It centers around sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives in the post-apocalyptic world in Panem. In the book, the Hunger Games are an annual televised event where the Capitol (the government) chooses one boy and one girl aged 12 to 18 from each of the country's 12 districts for a large televised battle where only one person can survive. Anyone who checks out a book by Riordan through Sept. 23 will have a chance to win tickets.
Rick Riordan, author of the popular young adult series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Kane Chronicles, and The Heroes of Olympus, will be making an appearance in Pittsburgh—and Plum Community Library patrons could have a chance to see him. Riordan will be coming to Carnegie Library's Lecture Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. as part of his Olympian Week Tour to promote his new Heroes of Olympus novel, The Son of Neptune. To celebrate, Plum Community Library is giving away two free passes to the event. Simply check out one of Riordan's books from now until Sept. 23. Plum Borough teen Holly Vizino is a favorite volunteer among library staff and story time visitors.
Each Tuesday, Plum Community Library volunteer Holly Vizino helps as the library staff shares a story with its Tiny Tots program attendees. But that isn’t the only story Liz Kostandinu, the library’s children’s programming coordinator, likes to share. She’s also happy to tell about how the 18-year-old volunteer—the only young volunteer to help out at the library year-round—stepped in to help with story time during its summer reading program. That is the library’s busiest time of the year, Kostandinu said. “Holly embraced her new duties enthusiastically and has become a favorite of our youngest patrons,” she said.
