Oblock Jr. High Briefly Evacuated Due to Smoke

Students returned back to class after a brief evacuation Monday.

Students at Oblock Jr. High in Plum are back in class after a brief evacuation Monday morning. According to the Allegheny County Twitter page, fire crews were dispatched to the school because smoke was coming from the ceiling of two classrooms on the second floor. A county dispatcher said the incident was due to an A/C malfunction, according to Post Gazette reporter John Schmitz.

The summer driving season is just around the corner, a time when Plum-Oakmont drivers brace for more pain at the pump. But maybe not this year. Retail gas prices have dropped steadily since the end of February because more refineries have come back on line after routine maintenance, and crude oil prices have moved sharply lower, reports the AAA . Analysts predict prices could fall another 20 cents a gallon during the next two months because of lower-than-expected demand in the world's two largest economies, the United States and China. Homicide, Drug Arrests Made in Plum

Several people have been charged following a deadly shooting in Penn Hills last week.

Several people were arrested at a Havana Drive home in Plum earlier this week following a deadly shooting in Penn Hills. According to the Post Gazette, a shooting that occurred on Westwood Road last Friday led to the death of a 21-year-old and the arrests of five people. Charges have been filed against Ronald Riviere, 32; Kwasi Prince, 21; Michael Siddo, 34; Michael Josephs, 38; and Tarique Smith, 37. Accoding to the newspaper, Riviere shot prince and Brandon Stokes when he was reaching into his pocket to get money for a McDonald's run. Stokes died from a gunshot wound to the chest and Prince survived after being shot in the stomach. According to WPXI, police arrested Riviere on Havana Drive earlier this week. Plum Native Running For Pancreatic Cancer Awareness

Don Furko Jr. is running the Pittsburgh Half Marathon next weekend in memory of his father and in honor of TEAMHope.

A Plum native is taking the challenge of running 13.1 miles in honor of his late father. Don Furko Jr., affiliate coordinator of the Pittsburgh-area Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, has been training for months to run his first half marathon—and he's doing it all in memory of his father, Don Furko Sr., and in the name of a cure to pancreatic cancer. Don Furko Sr.—he grew up in Oakmont, raised his family in Plum, and was the former girls' soccer coach at Plum High School—was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the fall of 2010. He died less than two months later. Furko Jr.—a Plum High School graduate—will run the Pittsburgh Half Marathon on Sunday as part of the TEAMHope program benefiting the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Last year, …

Plum, Oakmont Volunteers Chosen as Finalists for Prestigious Award

The two local residents up for the national "Salute to Senior Service" award are among four Pittsburgh area residents nominated.

There are silent heroes among us who volunteer their efforts and expect nothing in return. Locally, Bob McCandless of Oakmont and Darnell (Jeff) Pope of Plum are two whose stand-out contributions are making a difference everyday in the lives of others. And for their tireless work, both men are being recognized for their volunteerism as finalists who could be named Pennsylvania’s most outstanding senior volunteer. The Salute to Senior Service" program, sponsored by Home Instead, Inc., is honoring the contributions of adults 65 and older who volunteer at least 15 hours a month. McCandless and Pope are among the 68 seniors across the state who were nominated and named as finalists.  Both have served as longtime volunteers at local senior …

Earth Week Events Planned in the Plum-Oakmont Area

In honor of Earth Day, various organizations are sponsoring events and activities in the community. Here's how you can get involved: Verona Verona is hosting its third annual "Earth Day Celebration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 27 at Verona Municipal Park, 736 E.
