Firefighters hope to have a new truck delivered in 2014.
Firefighters from the Unity Volunteer Fire Department in Plum are hoping to get a new truck next year. Fire officials have gotten the go-ahead to begin working on specifications for a new pumper truck that would be delivered in 2014. Tonight, Wednesday, they are planning to see a new truck from a Bellvue fire department to see if the same kind of truck would work for their station. Three Jackson Road residents have been displaced after a tree fell on their home Wednesday night.
A home on Jackson Road has been condemned after a tree fell on it Wednesday night. Ira Helfer, president of the Unity Volunteer Fire Department, said firefighters were called to the Jackson Road home just after 11 p.m. Helfer said an old, large tree fell on the house. He said he isn't sure if the tree's age or the weather caused it to fall. Three residents were displaced, and firefighters arranged for the Red Cross to help them. Jason Straley, Plum Borough planning director, said the house sustained major damage in the back, and it has been condemned. Tree removal crews were on site Thursday morning pulling branches off of the house. _______________________ Plum-Oakmont Patch is on Facebook and on Twitter. Don't forget to sign up for …

Plum officials are considering implementing a hydrant fee for all residents to benefit the borough's fire fund. Council had voted on the matter last year and decided to give it more time. Members of the borough council finance committee—Mike Dell, Keith Nowalk and Don Knopfel—met with fire department officials on Tuesday to discuss the possibility. All four borough fire departments—Holiday Park, Unity, Logans Ferry and Renton—had representatives present at the meeting. The borough's fire fund—used to pay for fire department equipment and apparatuses, insurance, hydrant and water service, worker's compensation and more—currently has a…
