Verona Council discussed several items at the Jan. 8 council meeting. Here's a roundup: Accounting Help Verona officials are looking into hiring someone to help with managing the finances in the borough office. Councilwoman Rhoda Gemellas-Worf said she invited Jerry Kenna of Oakmont to speak with council during the Jan. 29 workshop meeting about offering additional accounting and financial services to the borough. "We need to run Verona as a business," Gemellas-Worf said. Some officials and residents have expressed concern about the lack of financial detail outlined in the borough's annual budget and monthly statements. Verona to host Raider Bonfire It’s Verona’s turn to host the Raider Bonfire and the borough is primed for some Riverview pride. The event offers food, drinks and entertainment and will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Verona’s municipal park along East Railroad Avenue. Among the food and beverages offered are caramel apples and hot chocolate. Daily Juice juice barrels (Huggies) will be provided, compliments of Verona Council and the Verona Chamber of Commerce. Entertainment will be provided by Riverview’s cheerleaders and band. The Raider Man will also make a special appearance. This year, for the first time, a Riverview High School class—Patsy Kvortek’s Sports and Entertainment Management class—is running the show, borough …

Ordinance update and advice Borough solicitor Craig Alexander updated and advised officials on several ordinances, including the following: Blighted Property Ordinance The borough’s blighted property ordinance is “99 percent done,” according to Alexander. Due to the state’s Neighborhood Blight Reclamation and Revitalization Act signed into law October 2010, municipalities are able to take owners of blighted properties to court and seek judgments against their assets instead of just liens against the properties themselves.
