ReplyI have never seen traffic so backed up in Oakmont before. It was not moving from the bridge all the way across Allegheny Avenue. I took a back way up Plum Street to Frankstown to go around it. Whew!

On the article Should Local School Districts Open Their Own Cyber Schools?

ReplySomething that seems to be ignored in the cyber school discussing is the drop out rate. I teach high school drop outs GED Prep. I work with kids who had issues with the traditional school. Many of them tried cyber school first but couldn't handle it.
If a student does not want to attend traditional school, what is going to motivate them to actually participate in the cyber school? I am talking about students who do not have parental support to complete their work.
Take a look at the yearly reports that our Dept of Education release. The graduation rates for the cyber schools are dismal.... between 30% and 60%. This is quite concerning.
I'm not saying cyber schools are not valuable. I simply dislike that they are marketed as the perfect fit for every/any kid.

On the article Oakmont Council to Interview Jensen for Borough Manager Position

Excuse me, Ms. Calabrese, but I don't think you know me well enough to attack my OPINION. I have been a resident of Oakmont since July, 1980. I have known many wonderful people of Oakmont who were quiet leaders and wonderful contributers, and yet never held any title.
I know Lisa Jenson. I know she would be incredible as Borough Manager. That is my opinion, and I don't think it is up to you to question my opinion. If you had a better candidate in mind, then perhaps you should speak with the council instead of trashing them on here? Not a very community-oriented thing to do. We need to support one another and lift each other up. Why be so negative?
