Riverview Superintendent Retiring

Charles Erdeljac, Riverview's superintendent, will retire at the end of the 2011-12 school year. The district will begin the search for a superintendent soon and the selected candidate will begin in July, according to officials.

Superintendent Charles Erdeljac started his education career with the and he’s ending it there as well.

Dr. Erdeljac will retire at the end of the 2011-2012 school year.

“I’m simply retiring at the end of my career,” he said.

He has worked in public education for nearly 40 years. The past 13, he has served as Riverview’s superintendent.

He began his career as an English teacher at Riverview in the 1970s. He was also a football coach, a track coach and the sponsor of the school’s newspaper in his eight years at the high school.

From there, Erdeljac went to North Allegheny, where he was a principal for six years, and Hampton High School, where he was a principal for 18 years.

Officials announced last night at Riverview’s school board meeting that they will work with the Pennsylvania School Board Association (PSBA) to seek candidates through its statewide network for the opening Erdeljac’s retirement leaves behind.

Superintendent candidates will apply through the PSBA website.

“We would like to have someone in place by July 1,” said Frank Thompson, Riverview’s business manager.

The school board will determine a start date for the candidate search in the coming months, Erdeljac said.

“We are optimistic that qualified, enthusiastic leaders will be interested in being the new superintendent,” he said.

Erdeljac is Riverview’s third superintendent. He and the two men who preceded him, Dr. Cecil Tranquil and Dr. Roger Knapp, had both worked previously at Riverview.

“All three of us started here as teachers and found our way to administration positions,” he said.  

Tranquil was superintendent for nine years, Knapp, for 23.

An resident for 56 years, Erdeljac said he plans to stay in Oakmont and looks forward to spending time with his grandchildren, the oldest of which will begin kindergarten at Tenth Street Elementary next year.

“We’re part of this unique region,” he said, citing a recent story in National Geographic Traveler magazine that declared Pittsburgh one of the 12 best places in the world to visit in 2012.

“I love this whole area and hope to remain active and supportive of a lot of the good things going on,” he said.
